At an early age I knew that I wanted to help people. While growing up, I told my parents that I wanted to become a nurse. I am grateful that they saw my natural bent and encouraged me to follow my dreams. I have always been especially fond of senior citizens. As a child I loved sitting at their feet and listening to their life stories and the struggles they overcame. I discovered that they had skills and talents. I also learned of their unfulfilled dreams and desires. I went on to become a nurse and served in many capacities over 34 years. As I approached retirement, I begin to reflect on the stories I heard as a child. I began to have a better understanding of how they were feeling back then. I could now relate to the void in their lives. I too was now feeling unfulfilled. I knew that this was a time in my life that I was closing one chapter and entering into a new one.
